How to measure a horse for a rug
Use a tape measure, a piece of string or baling twine. I have used the baling twine from bales of hay to measure my horse and then measured the twine with the tape measure afterwards.
Start at the center of the horses chest, horizontally along his side finishing where you require the rug to finish. It is best to allow an extra 3 inches on top of this for turnouts in most cases, especially if the turnout has a neck cover.
Stable rugs are usually correct at the measured size and do not need any extra added. All rugs are sized in feet and inches.
If your horse is between sizes then you are usually better to go up a size, unless the horse is narrow chested.

When I first measured my horse for a rug with a tape measure, she did not like the tape at all, she thought it was some kind of monster!!
I had to start by slowly rubbing the tape measure all over her body and left the tape on the floor for a while. She started to smell the tape and then I laid it over her back.
After a while she didn't mind the tape measure.
With the bailing twine she allowed me to measure her straight away with no problem at all
