Daughter to ParisPip, is the first horse I have ever owned. She is an English Cob and piebald colouring. I got her when she was four months old and I was nervous around her and needed people with me!
Truth is, I shouldn't of bought a horse feeling like this but I fell in love with her straight away. A chap at the stables where I was going to keep, Pip, was also looking at buying, Paris and we both went together to see them. The chap who was selling, Pip, wanted me to take her straight away. I asked the chap who bought, Paris, if I could keep, Paris and Pip, together and I would help look after, Paris, for him so, Pip, could still have her milk, that way I could start weaning her off her mother when she was six months old. He agreed because he would see, Paris, everyday as he only wanted her for breeding and would see she was being looked after. I paid for her upkeep while she stayed with, Pip. He also had other horses at the same stables. I knew I was very lucky to be able to do this for, Pip. In the end I kept, Paris, right up until, Pip, was nearly one year old and then, Paris, returned to her owner and put into foal. We missed her like crazy and so did, Pip. We had came to love her very much. I spent more time working with, Pip, every day and night, that really helped build my confidence up. I bought all the books and watched all the videos on how to handle a horse. Some of the books and videos help me, but the best thing I think I did was join the horse forums and started to ask lots of questions. You really do get some great advice from members that have had horses for years. Pip, is a healthy horse and the only problem I have to watch with, Pip, is putting on weight! She loves her food and can put a lot of weight on. This happened the first 2 years of having, pip, I had to cut her paddock down in size which helped her a lot to lose weight. One thing about, Pip, she really enjoys taking over at being the alpha mare when her mother, Paris, is in the stable. She becomes the boss lady until her mother returns!!! She is very gentle and loves to be groomed, just like, Paris! She can be very lazy when it comes to the farrier. He always tells her off for putting all her weight on him and not hold herself up. She has a love of water, a lot like, Ollie!. She will take the hose pipe from you and throws her head all over with the water running all over her head, face and body. She puts her face into the water buckets and chucks the water all over until the bucket is empty! When it comes to washing, Pip, she is not to sure at first, but then loves the water to run all over her body. I sent, Pip, away when she was 4 years old to an horse trainer to be broke in for riding. She stayed there for over 2 months. I was so surprised to see such a change in her. When I called in on her, which I did regularly, she would stand well and lift her hooves to be washed out. Her whole behaviour had improved, she was more mature now. She loved the horse trainer and was very happy and made friends with the other horses that were also there. It was lovely to see her being ridden by the trainer and I could see that she enjoyed going out. She looked like a different horse! I found the horse trainer from the website, Kelly Marks, a Recommended Associate. It was one of the RA's who worked with, Kelly, at that time, Debbie Glennan. Sadly she no longer works with horses, but her partner still does riding lessons and breaks in horses, Ruth Fisher, who helped with breaking in Pip. I know if I need any help again, the RA's on the site are all brilliant! Pip, is bigger then her mother and her father. Her father is a piebald and very similar in markings to, Pip. He is a very gentle stallion and not at all nasty in any way. His name is, Bob! Pip is completely up to date with all her tetanus and flu injections, worming and trims. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~UPDATE~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ APRIL 2013 One morning I noticed, Pip, standing with her head down and leaning forward! It filled me with horror! Milly, came back to my mind on the morning I found her in with my horses a few years ago. I felt, Pip's, hooves and they were warm! I knew it was laminitis and took her to a lady up the lane from the field, to rest in her stable. The vet checked her hooves and couldn't find a pulse! Then she asked for, Pip, to be walked around outside the stable and then checked her again and this time there was a pulse! The vet said I had caught her in good time and her bone had not rotated. To me that was a blessing indeed. But still very sad. The vet said, Pip,needs to be kept in the stable on a thick bed of shavings, soaked hay and needs exercise a couple of times a week. Here she is at Beauvale. She really enjoyed her time out in the school and had a buck and a gallop and then stood looking at the other horses for a while. It wasn't long before she was ready to go back into the stable! A far happier girl after a short time out! Pip, is now back with her friends in her field and doing well! our beautiful young lady, Pip! The whole gang enjoyed, Pip's big day! She had treats (sugar free) and a beautiful new head collar and hoof pick! Pip, received 20 birthday wishes. A massive thank you to all that participated! Jules Hop I used to own a horse just like Pip! I sold him to buy a bigger horse, but regret is everyday. I love Rigger the same but the difference is huge in their personality. Looking at Pip is like looking at my Star! Never let her go, you will be sorry if you do :( Jules. Horsecaring5 Thank you, Jules! I don't intend to let her go anywhere! I have had her from being 4 months old and know her inside out!! She can be a bit moody at time, but most mares can be! I'm so sorry for you. What a shame. Do you never get to see, Star, at all? It would be nice if you could! I wish you all the luck with your new horse and I don't doubt for one minute that you will fall in love with, Rigger, in the same way you did with, Star! Thanks again, Jules! Jules Hop Thank you Horsecaring5! I'm pleased you are keeping her. I did go and visit with Star a few times but it was hard leaving him. I know he is being looked after and told her to let me know if she was going to sell him on, then I would have him back. I believe that I will have him back with me one day. Just hope it's not to far away! Yes, I am feeling so much love for Rigger! I will keep him if I do ever get the chance of getting Star back. I will have to get another job to keep two horses on. But that is nothing in my eyes. Keep up the great work you do with horses. I love your website. You have put lots of information on to help people with horses. I have liked your facebook page also and love the updated photos and stories of the horses. Well done for keeping them together! Jules. Horsecaring5 Thank you for your very kind words! I just hope that it helps new horse owners on how to look after horses! Please feel free to send in any ideas or any advice to pass on to others. I will publish it for you! Keeping horses healthy and safe is my main interest!! |
